The liberal studies minor is a multidisciplinary program that adds foundational elements of K-8 subject matter preparation and practical field experience to any student’s major course of study. The program provides students with the opportunity to develop a teaching philosophy and acquire basic subject-matter knowledge in five to seven content areas with an understanding of diversity and culture in a classroom setting; this may provide some preparation for substitute teaching and lesson planning. Students work closely with an advisor in major and minor fields in order to create an organized on-campus study.

NOTE: The minor does not fulfill the California Subject Matter Requirement. Liberal studies minors must maintain a C or higher in all courses credited toward the minor.

Program Learning Outcomes

Students who successfully complete this program shall be able to:

1. Demonstrate knowledge of subject matter (Language Arts, Math, Science, Art, Physical Education, Human Development, History) with research-based pedagogical practices to design and implement effective learning experiences for diverse learners.
2. Apply principles of child development and learning theories to create differentiated and engaging learning environments that foster critical thinking, creativity, and social-emotional growth.
3. Communicate effectively in speech and in writing to analyze educational challenges, advocate, and collaborate with stakeholders.
4. Integrate biblical principles and ethical considerations into professional practice, demonstrating a commitment to the well-being and equitable treatment of all students.
5. Engage in reflective practice to deepen subject matter knowledge and cultivate a disposition towards continuous learning to remain responsive to the evolving needs of learners and the educational landscape.
